🛣️ Route Taken

Bangalore → Anantapur → Kurnool → Atmakur → Dornala → Srisailam

Total Distance: ~540 km

Travel Time: Around 10–11 hours (including breaks)

Toll: Approx 1500(round Trip)

🛤️ Highway Details & Road Conditions

1️⃣ Bangalore → Anantapur → Kurnool

Smooth 4-lane NH44 (Bangalore–Hyderabad Highway) till Kurnool. Excellent for long stretches and consistent speeds. Plenty of food and fuel options along the way ideal for early breakfast or brunch breaks. We stopped before Doddaballapura for breakfast. Anantapur Pakashall hotel is the next option.

2️⃣ Kurnool → Atmakur → Dornala

The road narrows into a 2-lane single route from Atmakur to Dornala. This section passes through the Nagarjunasagar–Srisailam Tiger Reserve, offering lush forest views and a peaceful drive. Drive cautiously — occasional wildlife crossings and winding roads. Before reaching Kurnool, you should take a deviation towards Atmakur. This is a newly constructed NH 340C highway, though the stretch is currently completed only up to Atmakur.

3️⃣ Dornala → Srisailam

After Dornala, the road widens again to a double lane. Well-maintained surface with scenic viewpoints along the ghat section. The uphill stretch to Srisailam is smooth and enjoyable for hill-drive lovers.

⚠️ Important Note – Forest Entry Timing

At Dornala Forest Check Post, vehicle entry is allowed only between 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM.

⏰ Plan your journey accordingly — entry outside these hours is strictly restricted due to forest safety regulations.

  • Boat Ride to Akkamahadevi Caves:

🚤 Boat Ride to Akkamahadevi Caves

After the Mallikarjuna Shivaling Darshan, one of the most thrilling activities to experience in Srisailam is the boat ride to Akkamahadevi Caves. This is an insane 4-hour round trip on the Krishna River backwaters, surrounded by steep mountains, pristine waterfalls, and untouched forest landscapes.

The journey feels like entering a different world — peaceful, raw, and completely natural. The caves themselves are dedicated to Goddess Akkamahadevi and reaching them by boat adds to the adventure. The ride is operated by APTDC and starts from the Pathala Ganga boating point near Srisailam Dam.

Tips:

🕐 Duration: ~4 hours (round trip)
💧 Carry water and light snacks
🎫 Tickets: Available at Pathala Ganga counter
⚠️ Boat timings depend on water level and weather conditions, Plan early as possible (before 11 AM)

While returning, we took a detour to the Mahanandi Temple near Nandyal, a serene temple known for its sacred water pools. It’s a must-visit temple after Srisailam for those seeking peaceful spiritual vibes and beautiful surroundings.

Return Route: Srisailam → Dornala → Nandyal → Mahanandi → Peapully →Anantapur → Bangalore

The road is a mix of single and double lanes, crossing state and national highways. After Peapully, the route joins NH44 (Bangalore–Hyderabad Highway) again — a smooth drive all the way back to Bangalore.

📍 Trip Tips

Start early from Bangalore (around 4–5 AM) to avoid city traffic and enjoy a smooth highway stretch.

Refuel at Kurnool or Atmakur before entering the forest stretch — fuel stations are sparse beyond this point.

🥤 Carry snacks and water, as facilities inside the forest zone are limited.

🍴 Recommended stopovers: Kurnool for breakfast or lunch; Atmakur for tea breaks.

🕉️ Plan temple darshan timings early morning to avoid heavy crowds.

🚫 Avoid night drives through the forest — vehicles are only allowed between 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM at Dornala Check Post.

📸 Carry a camera — the forest routes, river backwaters, and hill views are absolutely stunning.

🏨 Stay options: Srisailam offers comfortable hotels, temple cottages, and guest houses near the main temple.
