Choosing Your Route to Munnar:

If you are planning a trip just for the Bangalore - Munnar - Bangalore route, I recommend sticking to Route 1 and dedicating one or two full days for local sightseeing in and around Munnar.

If you are planning the full circuit trip:
Bangalore → Munnar → Ooty → Wayanad → Coorg → Sakleshpur → Bangalore) then Route 2 is the highly recommended choice. This route offers the most scenic and adventurous start to your extensive journey, perfectly setting the tone for the rest of your beautiful hill station tour.

Route #1: The Udumalpet/Marayoor Route (The Most Scenic) (via Udumalpet):

Distance:      Approximately 475 - 485 km
Time:              9-10 hours of driving time (excluding breaks)
Route:             Bangalore → Hosur → Krishnagiri → Salem → Avinashi → Palladam → Udumalpet →                         Marayoor → Munnar.

Road Conditions: Excellent National Highways up to Udumalpet. The final 80-90 km ghat section from Udumalpet is extremely picturesque, but has winding, narrow roads (two-lane traffic)

The Vibe: This is generally the most preferred and well-maintained route, offering faster highway stretches. The final ghat section from Udumalpet is famous for its scenic beauty, passing through the beautiful Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary and Marayoor's sandalwood forests.

Expert Tip for Maximizing the Scenic Drive:

Depending on the time you start from Bangalore, at least you keep the 3 hours of daytime travel exclusively for last 80 KMS, so you will enjoy the breath-taking views, waterfalls and spend time on photoshoot at multiple spots along the way especially last 80 KMS.

My strong suggestion is to take stay around Udamalpet. You get decent stays and farm stay's near Udumalpet. This way when you start the next day morning - you will definitely enjoy the scenic route, and you will thank me for that.

Route #2 :    The Scenic Route (via Dindigul/Theni):

Route: Bangalore → Hosur → Salem → Dindigul → Theni → Munnar.

The Vibe: A slightly longer but incredibly picturesque drive that takes you through the stunning Theni countryside, making for excellent photographic stops before you begin your climb into Munnar.

Day 1: The Thrilling Drive (Theni to Chinnakanal)

Scenic Route: The route from Theni to Munnar, often taken via Bodinayakanur (Bodi) and Bodimettu/Poopara, is the one that feature.

Ideal Location for stay:

Chinnakanal is highly recommended for accommodation due to its stunning views of mountains, valleys, and the Anayirangal backwaters/dam. It is slightly away from the main Munnar town bustle, offering a more serene environment.

We booked Holiday Heaven Resort at chinnakanal for our road Trip, budget friendly yet superb accommodation.

Kollukumalai Peak Access:

You are spot-on about its proximity to Kolukkumalai Peak. The peak is most easily accessed by a 4x4 jeep safari from a place called Suryanelli, which is very close to Chinnakanal. Staying there makes it practical to catch the famous sunrise view, which requires an early morning (around 4:00 AM) jeep journey.

Practical Tip for Kolukkumalai, Since Kolukkumalai is a major highlight:

Jeep Requirement: The road to Kolukkumalai is extremely rough and rocky, necessitating a 4x4 jeep. Regular cars are not allowed/cannot traverse the path.

Booking: It's often best to ask your accommodation in Chinnakanal to arrange the jeep safari for Kolukkumalai the night before, as they will have direct contacts with the local jeep drivers in Suryanelli.

Look for accommodation near Chinnakanal village.

Day 2: Munnar Local Sightseeing & Tea Estate Stay

Morning Activity: Kolukkumalai Sunrise & Tea Estate

Since you stayed near Chinnakanal or Suryanelli village, the practical and most breathtaking morning activity is the Kolukkumalai Jeep Safari to witness the sunrise over the tea estates. This is the world's highest organic tea estate and a stunning experience.

After breakfast, head towards the main Munnar attractions (don't miss chinnakanal water fall on the way).

Here is a list of some of the popular attraction places around Munnar:

  1. Anayirankal Dam Reservoir: Surrounded by lush tea gardens and dense forests, known for its serene environment and boat rides.
  2. Top Station: The highest point in Munnar, offering panoramic views of the Western Ghats. It is also famous for the rare Neelakurinji flowers which bloom once every twelve years.

  3. Echo Point: A scenic spot on the banks of Kundala Lake, famous for its natural echo phenomenon.

  4. Pothamedu Viewpoint: Offers spectacular views of the tea, coffee, and cardamom plantations, popular for trekking and hiking.

  5. Lockhart Gap: A scenic viewpoint surrounded by tea plantations and misty hills, ideal for trekking.
  6. Eravikulam National Park: Famous for protecting the endangered Nilgiri Tahr (a mountain goat). It is also home to the Anamudi Peak, the highest peak in South India.
  7. Mattupetty Dam & Lake: A popular picnic spot with boating facilities and beautiful views of the surrounding hills and the reservoir.

  8. Kundala Dam Lake: Asia's first arch dam, offering boating facilities like pedal boats and shikhara rides.

  9. Tea Museum: Visit the Tea Museum in Munnar town to learn about the history and processing of tea in the region. You can also explore the local market for spices and souvenirs.

Accommodation: Tea Estate Stay:
Look for a unique resort, homestay, or plantation bungalow nestled away from the main Munnar town. These provide the best "nature-to-its-best" experience, with sweeping views of the tea gardens right from your balcony.

Areas like Pallivasal, Chithirapuram, or even continuing in the Chinnakanal/Devikulam belt offer excellent estate stays.

Practical Tip:
Book your tea estate stays in advance, as these are very popular and are the best way to fully immerse yourself in Munnar's signature landscape. You'll wake up to the mist and the smell of fresh tea leaves.

The road descends into the lower hills. The key segment is passing through the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (Tamil Nadu) and the adjoining Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (Kerala). This forest route is heavily protected and offers the chance to spot wildlife (elephants, deer, peacocks, etc.).

If you have time before starting the drive, you could consider a quick visit to the Edakkal Cave (requires a morning hike) or the Banasura Sagar Dam.

The most significant part of this drive is passing through the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary (Wayanad, Kerala) which connects to the Nagarhole National Park (Rajiv Gandhi National Park) in Karnataka. This is another prime wildlife sighting opportunity.

Forest Crossing Advisory: Check Timings/Restrictions:

Like the previous day, the forest gates here (particularly in the Nagarhole sector) have strict night travel restrictions (usually 6 PM to 6 AM). Plan to cross this entire section during daylight hours.

The Coffee Gateway
  • Nagarhole → Coorg (Madikeri): After exiting the forest, you will enter the scenic coffee plantations of South Coorg (Gonikoppal/Virajpet) and then proceed towards the main town of Madikeri.
  • Accommodation: Stay in Coorg (Madikeri/Virajpet)
  • Recommendation: Book a stay in a coffee estate homestay or resort outside of Madikeri town for the best Coorg experience, surrounded by the aroma of coffee blossoms and pepper vines. Popular areas for estate stays are Virajpet, Ammathi, or Pollibetta.

Suggested Stops En Route:

The drive is relatively short, allowing you a good half-day to settle in Coorg and perhaps visit a local viewpoint like Raja's Seat in Madikeri for the sunset.
